The discipline of less is not the absence of design
Restraint is the hardest thing to draw. After a year cutting a product down to its joints, I learned that what you remove is the work.
I spent the better part of last winter deleting things. A studio in Hamburg had asked me to revisit an interface we shipped in 2019 — three hundred screens, forty components, a settings panel nobody could finish reading. The brief was modest: make it feel calmer. It took four months to understand that calm is not a finish you apply at the end.
Subtraction is a decision, not a default
Every element that stayed had to earn the white around it. We cut the second toolbar, then the helper text under each field, then the icons that only repeated the labels. The page did not look emptier. It looked finished — as if the margins had always been part of the composition rather than the leftover space between parts.
The grid is not a constraint you fight. It is the only thing holding the silence in place.
