In the spring of 1947, a survey party set out from Kirkuk with twelve theodolites and a single field radio set. Their brief: chart a route across six hundred miles of desert, mountain, and coastal plain to the Mediterranean. What they laid down was not just a pipeline — it was the skeleton of a new regional order, drawn in steel and pumping-station coordinates.


The Twelve-Inch Decision

The bureau's engineers debated the diameter for eighteen months. A sixteen-inch line would carry more crude — perhaps four million tons annually against the twelve-inch design capacity of two — but the steel shortage of the late 1940s made it impossible. Twelve inches, they concluded, was the largest feasible bore for a continuous welded line crossing triple-digit summer temperatures and the basalt fields west of H-3. It turned out to be the right constraint: the narrower diameter kept pressure manageable without intermediate boosting stations, cutting construction cost by nearly a third.

The desert does not yield to steel — it absorbs it, reclaims it, and then, decades later, surrenders it to the archive.

By the time the first barrel reached the Haifa terminal in early 1950, the pumping stations at Haditha, H-3, and T-4 had become small towns in their own right — each with a British engineering compound, an Arab workers' quarter, and a daily routine governed not by the clock but by the pressure gauge. The pipeline did not merely cross the landscape; it invented a geography of its own.
