I spent the better part of November 2024 deleting code. Not refactoring—deleting. Six thousand lines of typed service code, two hundred API endpoints, an entire microservice that had been dutifully answering health checks since 2022 without once serving a real request. The system got faster. Not because the code was bad—it was not—but because every absent line is a decision that no longer needs to be revisited.

What silence costs

The orthodoxy of modern engineering treats silence as failure. A dashboard with no alerts is a dashboard that is broken. A metric that flatlines is a metric that needs replacing. But the most stable systems I have encountered—the ones that run for years without incident—are the ones nobody talks about. They are not exciting. They do not make conference talks. They simply work, and their working is invisible.
