A Yellow Line
Through Memory
The oldest underground in continental Europe still speaks through glazed tile, low ceilings, and a carriage polished by hands.
On 2 May 1896, Budapest opened a railway beneath Andrássy Avenue for the millennial celebrations. I return to it because the line refuses the usual promise of speed: its low rooms make a short journey feel like a passage through memory.
A tunnel built in layers
Look closely and the system becomes tactile. Chestnut tiles stop at a clean dado, pale glazed squares catch uneven light, and brass-coloured capitals gather the ornament overhead. It is a working interior that has learned how to age.
