Chapter II · The Field and Its Laws 03 / 12

THE WAY OF THE PLAIN

The chalk circle holds final authority
No whistle, no timer — the white circle on frozen earth alone renders judgment over the match.
Forty riders seize one headless carcass
Felt-wrapped goat soaked to weight. Claimed bareback at full gallop, defended with whip and rein against all comers.
The chapan carries more than warmth
Striped robes woven in Mazar-i-Sharif mark district, lineage, and rank in every thread of heavy wool.
The plain draws its own boundary lines
No fences, no sidelines. The game ends when the carcass rests in the circle, or when darkness falls across the steppe.
