The cost of smooth surfaces
Pāhoehoe lava looks almost liquid — continuous, ropy, clean. But the crust is thin, and gas pockets hide beneath it. Our cloud stack had the same anatomy. Auto-scaling groups papered over memory leaks. Managed databases hid query planners that had drifted into pathological regimes. Polished surfaces. Fractured foundations.
We mistook frictionless deployment for structural integrity.
The ʻaʻā approach is the opposite — jagged, broken, honest. Bare metal forces you to feel every edge. The first week was brutal: kernel panics, firmware mismatches, a switch that dropped every third packet. By the fourth, we knew the stack cold. No black boxes left.
