I spent three weeks in January recalibrating the ground-glass on a camera built in 1973. The mechanism — six brass screws, a pair of stainless-steel leaf springs, and a focussing screen thinner than a sheet of vellum — had been factory-set to a tolerance of 0.03 millimetres. After fifty years and perhaps eight thousand exposures, it was off by less than half a hair’s breadth. The correction took four hours, most of it spent waiting for the room to settle to a stable temperature.

Precision is not the same as perfection

The engineers who designed the 500-series bodies understood something that modern product teams often forget: precision is a constraint, not a goal. Every calibrated surface and machined edge exists because someone decided, explicitly, where the boundary of acceptable variation lay. That decision — not the measurement itself — is where craft lives. An automated system can achieve consistency, but it cannot make a choice.

The best tools do not make the work easier. They make the work honest.

When I load a roll of film into that chrome body and advance the crank with my thumb, I am not engaging with nostalgia. I am engaging with a set of decisions — about metering, about composition, about the moment of release — that a fully automated camera would make on my behalf. Some of those decisions I should not cede. The question is not whether the machine can choose well, but whether the act of choosing itself matters.
