A warning is a kind of map

Last winter, I walked the old road beyond Steinau with a notebook in my coat and one question: why do these stories begin at the threshold? The answer was carved into every gatepost—danger is not a detour from the tale; it is the path that teaches us how to read the dark.

The brothers recorded these rooms in 1812, but the rooms still change shape. A locked chamber becomes a promise, a red apple becomes a verdict, and the forest keeps its counsel until the reader has earned the way home.
