When a civic typeface started sounding like a promise

I kept a folded proof of the poster on my desk through a wet week in March, the kind where the city turns every light into a reflection. What stayed with me was not the face so much as the lettering: compact, civic, and calm enough to make a crowded wall feel governed.
Why the grid felt trustworthy
That is the odd trick of Gotham: it borrows from the city itself, from terminal signage, address plates, and the plain geometry of things built to be read fast. In that first poster, the red, cream, and blue did not perform excitement; they organized it.
By the time the posters started repeating across storefronts in Washington and Brooklyn, the language had already done its work. Designers, printers, and local committees copied the same measured contrast because it handled strain without looking brittle.
