In the summer of 1997, I balanced on a wobbling desk chair for three nights, pressing glow-in-the-dark stars onto my bedroom ceiling one by one. By the fourth, Orion and a dragon of my own making floated above me in soft green afterglow. I was eight years old, and in that dark room, I was an astronomer.

Strontium aluminate doped with europium and dysprosium. I didn't know those words then — I just knew the package said "Glows up to 12 hours" and that was a promise I took literally. What I didn't understand was phosphorescence: electrons trapped in crystal defects, releasing their stored energy as visible light, one photon at a time, across an entire night.
