The format everyone wrote off is quietly powering the most interesting games of 2026.

I held a gray plastic rectangle in my hand last month and felt a jolt I had not experienced in twenty years. The cartridge clicked into the slot with that unmistakable resistance — not the hollow silence of a download bar filling up, but a physical transaction. The machine woke instantly. No loading screen, no patch notes, no login prompt. Just the title screen, exactly as it was burned into the ROM in 1992. Three friends watched over my shoulder, and all four of us leaned in at the same moment.

Four Hundred Thousand Times Slower

Engineers at three separate studios told me the same thing this year: flash memory on a parallel bus beats any network stack you can name. A cartridge ROM sitting six millimeters from the CPU on a 32-bit bus delivers data in under a hundred nanoseconds. The same asset fetched from a cloud CDN, even on a fiber connection, takes forty milliseconds. That is a factor of four hundred thousand. The physics have not changed since 1989. What has changed is that developers are finally admitting latency matters more than download convenience.

I asked Kei Nakamura at Studio Tokoro why they shipped their latest title on a custom cartridge. “Deterministic timing,” he said. “Every frame, every sprite, every audio sample happens at the exact microsecond we specify.”
