The Night Sky Was Never Meant to Be Empty
A chart is not a map of distance so much as a record of where human attention has chosen to rest.
When I opened the old chart in the reading room last winter, the first surprise was its crowding. Every spare dark interval had been given a name, a line, or a small bright argument in gold. The heavens were not vacant; they were kept.
To name a star is to keep company
The draughtsman understood that observation begins with devotion. His grid measures position, but the figures crossing it preserve memory: a hunter’s arm, a ship’s stern, a creature half lost beyond the border. Precision and wonder share the same field.
