The Grid Is Not a Cage. It Is a Decision.

A 1967 lesson in making every element earn its place on the page.

Last winter, while resetting a transit report for a small city office, I deleted the explanatory box everyone had defended in meetings. The figures became easier to compare the moment the page stopped narrating them twice. What remained was a sequence of values, a single rule, and enough silence to read them.

The page must take a position

That decision made the schedule more demanding, not less. Every label had to carry its actual weight; every gap had to establish a relation rather than act as decoration. A disciplined grid does not remove judgment. It makes judgment visible, line by line, before the reader has to ask for it.
