Maintenance foreman L. Kovacs has tracked cascading failures across Ring Sector 7 for eighteen months. Command says everything is nominal.

The first pressure anomaly appeared in the tertiary loop at 03:42 on a Tuesday. I was three hours into a double shift, running diagnostics on the desalination intake for Habitat Block 14. The alert blinked amber on my console — nothing dramatic, a 4 % deviation that the automated logs had already flagged and dismissed twice that week. I dismissed it a third time. That was my mistake.

The Cascade Nobody Logged

By the end of the quarter, seven of the twelve recycler units in Sector 7 were showing identical pressure drift. The pattern was unmistakable — a slow, synchronized degradation pointing to a single point of failure upstream, somewhere in the pre-filter manifold that connects the sector’s water grid to the ring’s primary supply line. I filed a maintenance priority request on March 4. It was closed on March 6 with a one-word annotation: “Monitor.”

They told us the green belts were self-sustaining. That was the pitch. That was always the pitch.

I have been reassigned to Sector 12. My replacement has not been briefed on the pressure anomalies. The recyclers in Sector 7 are still running. For now.
