I spent three weeks in the Empty Quarter last autumn, walking the perimeter of an abandoned observation post built in 1962. The structure was half-buried, its eastern face worn smooth by forty years of wind-driven sand, yet its core geometry — a simple square tower with chamfered corners — had held. No one had maintained it. No one had patched the concrete. The form itself resisted erosion by offering nothing for the wind to catch. That tower reshaped how I think about code.

The shape of what remains

Most software is built like a tent. It ships fast, catches the breeze, and collapses the moment conditions shift. The alternative — slower, harder, less celebrated — is to build like a desert outpost: few moving parts, deep foundations, surfaces angled against the prevailing force. When payment infrastructure was rebuilt from the ground up in 2019, the engineers described the process not as a rewrite but as an excavation. They dug into the old system, found its load-bearing walls, and rebuilt around them. The rest they let the wind carry away.

The desert does not reward speed. It rewards shape.
