the Fog
A field note on letters, lanterns, and the weather that keeps its secrets.
On 14 October 1897, the packet from Whitby arrived after dusk, its seal softened by salt. I opened it beside the ledger and found six lines in a hand that seemed to retreat from the page.
An archive is a door left ajar
The next morning, I moved every letter into the margin: the departure time, the missing lantern, the name of a ship no register could place. By noon, the fog had made a second room of the reading desk.
