The first thing you notice is the silence. Not ordinary quiet — the kind that presses against your eardrums, the absence of air molecules vibrating against the gold-leaf walls. The tungsten lamps fire at forty-five-degree angles into the dimpled surface, and what returns is not light but a computation of light: sodium-amber photons that have bounced exactly once, carrying the spectral signature of gold at 589 nanometers. You are standing inside a Faraday cage wrapped in a vacuum chamber, twelve meters below the redwood canopy, and the machine in front of you is running the universe backward.
The determinism objection
Katie spent six months arguing that the system could not be deterministic if it was also quantum. She was right, in the sense that any measurement collapses the wave function. She was wrong, in the sense that the machine does not measure — it registers. The distinction is technical but not trivial.
