The Clean Page Is a Dangerous Place

On 18 October 2003, I cleared my desk in the old north library and left one sheet beneath the lamp. The room became a tribunal: black ink, blue rules, and one red correction refusing to behave like decoration.

A margin is never empty

That restraint changes how a reader moves. A headline feels less like a welcome and more like a verdict; every margin becomes evidence, and the blank field around a sentence starts carrying its own quiet threat.
