Two months out from Aegis VII, on the descent shift, the primary bus on Deck B failed for the third time in a fortnight. I logged it, closed the panel, and went back to sleep. That is the honest part I have never written down. Nobody trained us to be careful about small failures on a ship this big; we were trained to be efficient. Efficiency, out here, is a slow and specific kind of hazard.

What a corridor teaches you

The Concordance is thirty-two decks of poured steel and rated for one hundred and eighty souls. When you walk it in the dark, with only the cyan wash of your suit’s spine reader spilling three meters ahead, you learn a corridor the way a diver learns a wreck — by feel, not by chart. You learn that the ventilation on B-14 hums in F, that the pressure door outside Medical seats a half-second late, that the emergency strips are keyed to the wrong bus and will not light when you need them to. Every ship has an argument with itself. You are just there to translate it.
