I spent two windy weeks in February measuring old thresholds above the caldera. The paint was not decorative in the modern sense; it was maintenance, sanitation, and a way to throw the noon sun back into the street.

A room begins with shade

The best houses turned inward, pressed rooms into the slope, and left doors blue enough to hold the sea in memory while the interior stayed cool and dim.

The lesson is severe and generous at once: build the shadow first, then let the white arrive.
