When Speed Was the Argument

A supersonic liner proved that engineering ambition could cross the Atlantic in three hours. Then the world chose to forget why that mattered.


The last time I stood beneath a supersonic liner at the aviation museum in the west of England, the thing that struck me was not its size but its certainty. Every surface, every rivet line, every compound curve of that ogival delta wing spoke of decisions made without apology. The engineers had solved problems that no one had asked them to solve, and they had solved them with an elegance that made the solutions feel inevitable. The fuselage skin, kept deliberately pale and pearl-grey, caught the skylights and threw them back as if the aircraft itself were still generating heat at Mach 2.

The Weight of Mach 2

At cruise speed, the airframe stretched from thermal expansion as kinetic friction heated the aluminium alloy past 120 degrees Celsius. Fuel moved between eleven tanks as the centre of gravity shifted crossing the sound barrier. The droop nose existed because the delta wing's landing angle was so steep that pilots could not see the runway without it.
