The case for a tree that takes its time
The best holiday rooms are built slowly, one branch and one brass ornament at a time.
Make room for the ritual
Last December, I stopped buying a taller tree. I brought home a modest fir from a roadside stand outside Kingston, carried it upstairs, and gave it the afternoon. The branches settled; the room did too. By dusk, the first lights felt like an invitation to stay.
We hung the lights before the ornaments, then left the gold baubles in their paper sleeves until dusk. That pause is the point: a room becomes festive through small decisions made slowly enough to remember. A red ribbon on the mantel can carry an entire evening.
