A Coiffe That GrewOne Centimetre at a Time
In Pays Bigouden, height became a record of patience, precision, and place.
After 1920, the haute coiffe rose by roughly a centimetre each year. In the workshops around Pont-l'Abbé, lace was starched, ironed flat, and mounted over an embroidered silk cap before it ever met the black wool of a Sunday gilet.
Height was a shared language
That height was not ornament alone. It was a public measure of care: every crisp edge, saffron stitch, and crimson thread carried the hours of a household into the square, where a silhouette could be read before a face.
