I first saw a Cholita wrestle at the Multifunctional Center in El Alto one March afternoon. When Juana climbed through the ropes in her full pollera, bowler hat pinned tight, braids swinging, the stadium erupted. She looked like every grandmother who had ever carried fifty kilos of potatoes up a hillside — compact, certain, and absolutely unbothered by your assumptions about what a woman in a pleated skirt could do inside a wrestling ring.
Each Pleat Holds a Lineage
The pollera is a monument stitched in fabric. Every pleat follows techniques passed through Aymara families since the colonial period, when Spanish authorities mandated that indigenous women wear certain skirts as markers of subjugation. What began as control became defiance. By the early twentieth century the pollera was no restriction — it was a declaration worn with absolute precision.
