The Last Freezer

A compressor failure in Building 7 rewrote every containment protocol we thought was permanent.

On the morning of February 11th, 2023, the primary cascade freezer in Building 7 registered a temperature excursion of 4.2 degrees Celsius above threshold. The alarm triggered at 03:47 UTC. By the time the on-call engineer arrived forty minutes later, three years of archived pathogen isolates had already crossed the viability threshold. No amount of protocol could reverse what thermodynamics had already decided.

Protocol Cascade

We had rehearsed freezer failures before — every BSL-4 facility does. The drills assume a single point of failure: the backup compressor kicks in, samples transfer to secondary containment, the incident logs itself. What nobody rehearses is what happens when the backup fails for the same reason the primary did. A firmware bug in the temperature controller shared by both units. Same vendor, same firmware revision, same defect.

Redundancy without independence is just a more expensive way to be surprised.
