The Gate Was Never Meant to Be Silent
The lamassu did not simply decorate a threshold; they made every visitor feel the sovereign power of crossing it.
At Dur-Sharrukin, a visitor met the kingβs authority before meeting the king. The figures at the doorway held a human face in profile, a bullβs force in their flanks, and five legs arranged so they seemed still from the front and striding from the side.
Architecture made the argument
That double reading was not ornament. It was choreography. The carved wedges crossing the guardianβs body repeated the same claim in every doorway: the palace had an order, a keeper, and a memory longer than the person passing through it.
