Why the Carvers Stopped

On the Armenian Highland, Bronze-Age dragon stones still stand without inscription — and that silence is the point.

They were raised between the third and second millennia BC, dragged from basalt quarries above Lake Sevan to ridge lines where winter wind strips the soil bare. No two are identical: some bear the incised outline of a fish, others the stretched hide of a bull, most carry only the pitted evidence of tools that stopped mid-stroke.

The silence of stones

Archaeologists once argued the stones were abandoned. I think they were completed. The unfinished groove, the patch of raw stone left unpolished — these read not as error but as grammar. A megalith does not need a final sentence to speak; it needs only to remain standing when everything around it has eroded.
