Against the soft dashboard

A case for cutting interface language until only decisions remain.

I spent two weeks last winter rewriting the operations screen for a freight office at Pier 18. The team did not need warmer labels or softer cards. They needed train numbers, dock doors, exceptions, and a single red mark where the night would break.

Neutral is not quiet

Good neutrality has pressure. It removes adjectives, aligns the remaining facts, and lets scale do the arguing. When every block sits on the same measure, the urgent item can be loud without decoration; it simply arrives larger, whiter, and earlier in the grid.
