I spent the first week of March watching a panel dry on a wooden table behind a cooperative studio in Kigali. The paste had been pressed into a ladder of diamonds before dawn; by lunch, its edges had tightened into a low relief that made every shadow feel intentional.

Imigongo is not decoration added after thought. It is thought given a ridge, sanded until the argument becomes calm.

Strictness as a form of care

The best panels are severe without being cold. Cream ground, lampblack line, rust field, ochre pause: four tones repeat until the eye stops searching for novelty and starts reading measure. That discipline is why the spiral survives fashion.

When a workshop teaches the herringbone, it teaches tempo first. A crooked segment is not corrected with apology; it is scraped, rebuilt, dried, and painted again, because the pattern belongs to everyone who will stand before it.
