A decade after the diagonal band crossed from the warehouse floor to the runway, it is being argued about in seminar rooms — and the argument is mostly about who is allowed to label what.

The first time I saw a hangtag treated as the actual product was in a warehouse off Via Tortona, in Milan, the November Abloh died. A friend who ran the second-floor space had laid a sweatshirt on a steel trestle table — not on a hanger, not on a mannequin, just flat — and looped a yellow zip-tie through the collar tag. The tag said, simply, “Garment.” The point was not the sweatshirt. The point was the air-quote: the small, sincere joke that this thing has been declared a thing.

An Argument, In Three Lines And A Border

Critics call the diagonal stripe a gimmick. They are wrong about the stripe and right about almost everything else. The stripe is a tool. It does what a wall does at a museum: it tells you that here, on this side of the rule, you are inside the exhibit. Pull the rule off, and the sweatshirt is just a sweatshirt — clever, but mute. Leave it on, and the room shifts. The grammar is the point; the noun is whatever you put underneath.
