I spent two weeks last January migrating 4,200 notes from a folder-based system into a graph-based vault. The folders were neat — Projects/2024/Research/ — but they were lies. Every note touched three or four topics, and forcing it into a single directory meant severing the connections that made it worth writing down.
The Filing Cabinet Is Dead
Hierarchical folders assume knowledge has a single address. It does not. A note about distributed systems might inform a talk on organizational design, which connects to a reading list on emergence in biology. When these links are explicit — typed edges in a graph — they become searchable, traversable, composable.

On a Tuesday in March, I opened the graph view and noticed a cluster I had never seen: six notes on feedback loops — one from a systems-theory seminar, one from a podcast transcript, one from debugging a race condition in production — all orbiting the same structural insight about circular causality. In a folder system, those notes live in four different directories with no reason to ever meet. In a graph, they found each other without me having to think about it.
