When the Stadium Became a Canvas

In 1968, a young designer and his collaborators rewrote every rule of Olympic visual identity. The system they built has never been matched.

In the spring of 1967, a young designer arrived in a sprawling capital city carrying little more than a portfolio of transit maps and an unshakeable conviction that graphic design could reorganize public space. Within six months, working alongside local architects and artisan collaborators, the team produced something no international event had ever attempted: a single visual language covering every surface, every sign, every ticket, and every broadcast frame for two weeks of global competition.

The Radiating Breakthrough

The signature motif was born from an unlikely collision. The designer had been studying optical-art experiments in European galleries, but it was a centuries-old tradition of intricate geometric beadwork that provided the missing key. Fusing the two traditions turned wayfinding signs, transit maps, and fabric prints into one pulsing optical field.
