Last winter, our team made a decision that felt counterintuitive at the time: we stopped adding features to Canvas. Not temporarily, not as a sprint exercise — we genuinely committed to removing things. The toolbar had grown to forty-seven items. The preferences panel had eleven tabs. We had built, over three careful years, exactly the kind of software we had set out to oppose.
Speed is not the same as momentum
The industry obsession with performance benchmarks misses something fundamental. A tool that renders in twelve milliseconds but takes forty minutes to learn is not fast — it is deferred cost. We spent two weeks last January sitting with new users, watching them navigate Canvas for the first time. Every hesitation was a design decision we had made badly. Every confused hover was a conversation the interface had refused to have.
The best design tool should feel like thinking out loud — not like operating heavy machinery.
