In October 1958, Poul Henningsen unveiled a pendant lamp built to solve glare, not court beauty. New low-wattage bulbs could sit in any socket, at any height, and every casual arrangement produced harsh direct light. His answer was five nested aluminium shades, each parabolically curved to redirect the filament away from the eye.
The Five Shades of Zero Glare
Each shade layer performs a specific photometric function. The top two redirect light upward for ambient wash. The middle shade absorbs stray mid-angle rays. The lower pair shapes the downward cone into a broad, even field: no hot spot, no falloff edge, no decorative surface without optical work.
